Brief history

The Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences

The Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences is the product of a merger between two departments from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences and two departments from the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts. The new Faculty is now made up of 4 departments: the Department of Philosophy, Ethics, and Religious Sciences, the Department of Political Science, the Department of Social Sciences and Labour Studies, and the Department of History, Arts, and Archaeology.

During the 2014-2015 academic year, the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences were restructured to integrate into ULB the translation and interpretation programmes offered at the ISTI and the Cooremans Institute. Two new faculty structures were thus created: the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Letters, Translation, and Communication.

Official representatives of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences created in 2015:

Valérie Piette - Dean (2019- ) Pascal Delwit - Vice-Dean (2019- )
Andrea Rea - Dean (2015-2019) Michèle Galand - Vice-Dean (2015-2017) Valérie Piette - Vice-Dean (2017-2019)

Brief history of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters

The law of 1890 divided the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters into Classical Philosophy, Philosophy, and History, to which Germanic Philology was added (created in 1910 with the help of the city of Antwerp), Roman Philology (established in 1920 with the support of the Hainaut Province), Art History and Archaeology (1931), Journalism and Communication (1945), African Linguistics (1970), Slavic Studies (1974), Information and Documentation (1977), and Languages and Linguistics (1980).

Several institutes were attached to the Faculty. Some provided structured teaching; this was the case for the Institute of Eastern Languages and Civilisations (formerly known as Eastern and Slavic Philology and History, created in 1930 and annexed to the Faculty in 1953) and the Institute for the Study of Religions and Secularism (1965). Others were more exclusively research-orientated, such as the Institute of Philosophy (1939) and the Institute for the Study of Renaissance and Humanism (1960).

Brief history of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FSP)

Formerly known as the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences/Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management—better known as SOCO—, the Faculty was created in 1946 by merging the Solvay Business School, founded in 1903, and the School of Political and Social Sciences (created in 1899 from the special teaching of Political and Social Sciences that had been established in 1889). Its structure was consolidated in 1964.

The Faculty took a new direction in 2010 by giving way to two new faculty entities: The Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management (SBS-EM) and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FSP).

With almost 3,000 students, the FSP was one of the biggest faculties in the University. It was structured around two departments: the Political Science Department and the Social Sciences and Labour Studies Department.
