Making Sense of Mexico’s Place in World Politics

Abstract
In this time of geopolitical upheaval, and in the context of the upcoming Presidential Elections in Mexico, please join us for a discussion of change and continuity in the foreign policy of the Mexican state, and the potential for new theoretical innovations to help us understand the complex interrelationships between foreign and domestic policy, and indeed between the state and the nation itself. Dr Omar Loera-González (CIDE) will present insights from his new book, Role Theory and Mexico's Foreign Policy, followed by comments from Dr Kevin Zapata Celestino (University of Nottingham).

Omar Loera-González is a professor and researcher of the International Studies Division of the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE) in Mexico City. In 2021 he graduated with a PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Edinburgh. In the same year, he won the Carlos Fuentes Prize 2019-2021, awarded to the most outstanding Mexican researcher in the UK in the field of social sciences.
Omar Loera-González has collaborated with research projects of the Inter-American Development Bank, is a collaborator of the think-tank Inter-Cultural Research, and has been a university lecturer for 9 years.
In 2023, his book: “Role Theory and Mexico’s Foreign Policy: Making Sense of Mexico’s Place in World Politics” won the Best Book Award by the Mexican Association of International Studies  for a publication in International Relations.
