Séminaire/webinaire de l'axe Partis, Élections et Représentation with Linda Bos (Universiteit van Amsterdam)

Abstract

Research on populist communication often emphasizes its negative aspects—anti-elitism, negative emotions, hostility, fake news labeling, and its links to misinformation and polarization. While these risks to liberal democracy are important to understand, fully grasping why voters are drawn to populist parties requires exploring additional dimensions. In this talk, I will present three recent studies highlighting how populist communication can also build bridges by (1) enhancing feelings of representation, (2) signaling distinct moral values, and (3) uniting publics.
