Bio

Dr. Carolina Dalla Chiesa is an Assistant Professor of Cultural Economics and Cultural Organisations at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Arts and Culture Department. Carolina is trained as a cultural economist and cultural anthropologist. She researches the changing landscape of funding, production and consumption of culture post-digitalization. She is an expert in novel funding models for the arts, collective organisations, and the socio-economics of cultural markets.

Description

The advancements of digitalization have contributed to the emergence of a burgeoning online economy for the cultural and creative sectors. Waldfogel (2019) calls this the "golden age of popular culture" where lower costs of producing, and consuming have upended traditional cultural industries. The same applies to new forms of financing and funding arts and culture where crowdfunding and (more recently) matchfunding demonstrate how creators find novel ways to finance/fund cultural production exerting use and non-use values. This presentation will discuss the cultural economics' perspective on crowdfunding for the arts and culture, and advance on matchfunding's potential contribution to novel public-private partnerships to fund culture using a case study from a Dutch online platform.
